“Talent Collider” at the CNA Annual Conference 2024

PTAG is proud to be a Silver Sponsor for the Canadian Nuclear Association’s (CNA) Annual Conference in Ottawa, February 28 – March 1.

As part of PTAG’s long-term commitment to supporting new and young people joining the nuclear industry, PTAG will be leading two initiatives during the CNA2024 Conference in Ottawa this week.

  • In the weeks leading up to the conference, PTAG has hosted six “resume review” sessions that assisted the 100 students attending the CNA Conference to arrive prepared.  These sessions were hosted by PTAG’s Nuclear industry team, as well as long-time conference attendees.   Through this mentorship, we are proud to have played a part in empowering these future leaders as they embark on encounters with potential employers, ensuring they make the most of this invaluable opportunity.
  • On Wednesday, the first day of the conference,  in collaboration with TALENT (Ontario Tech Talent) group, PTAG is co-facilitating a speed dating format “Talent Collider,” which brings the CNA Student attendees new to the industry face-to-face with senior industry executives to learn first hand about their journey and to hear their advice on what and where the opportunities are.  With 30+ executives participating,  students will meet with the executives in small groups of 2-4 people for short orchestrated periods of time.

We are excited to see everyone on Wednesday, February 28th, at the CNA2024 Student Program’s Talent Collider Session at 2:00 p.m. in Room 214 at the Shaw Centre.

CNA Annual Conference 2024: Foundations for Success

The sector will need to take full advantage of a range of opportunities including capitalizing on and building human talent, fostering public and private financing, accelerating research and innovation, forging meaningful and lasting Indigenous partnerships, and ensuring future fuel supply.

For the nuclear industry to fully realize these opportunities and ensure nuclear can play an even more fundamental role in Canada’s clean energy future, cooperation and coordination are more important than ever. At CNA2024, we will highlight the ways in which the sector can work together and with partners to build the foundations for success.

As part of PTAG’s long-term industry commitment to support more new and young people joining the Nuclear industry, we will be leading two initiatives during the conference:

  • Already underway, we have designed and are delivering 8 sessions that help the nearly 100 students attending the conference make the most of the experience as they meet potential employers for the first time
  • In collaboration with Ontario Tech University’s TALENT group, we have designed and will facilitate the speed dating format “Talent Collider,” which brings those new to the industry with Senior Executives

The world will increasingly rely on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to meet its emission reduction targets as it transitions its sources of energy generation. Compared to other generation alternatives, SMRs provide a safer, more reliable, economical, and environmentally responsible alternative for energy generation to supply industry and society.

Known as Industrial IPD this innovative approach to project delivery for industrial projects has been shown to significantly improve design optimization and reduce construction risks by fostering trust, transparency, and alignment between project key stakeholders. Industrial IPD has been shown to reduce risks, costs, schedules and delays while increasing safety, quality, innovation, and value. Industrial IPD uses many of CII’s Best Practices as part of its Framework approach to setting projects up for success.

Construction Industry Institute’s (CII) best practice – Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) is a planned, executable process that encompasses the work on an EPC project, beginning with initial planning and continuing through detailed design and construction execution. AWP focuses on bringing alignment amongst project teams – engineering, procurement, construction at the front-end of the project. The team helps determine the best project execution strategy to have a successful outcome. With the end in mind approach, AWP helps improve project visibility and predictability.

Lean Construction Institute’s Lean Project Delivery (LPD or Lean-IPD) aligns the key project participants as an integrated team with the common objective of acting as one team to deliver a project that creates the best value possible for the owner and success for all the stakeholders. The integrated project team helps the owner decide what they want and not only realize decisions and perform activities.

Lean-IPD offers collaborative tools to provide a clear framework with specific goals. Whereas AWP is a method that develops a clear path to construction, develops work packages that support the path to construction, aligns stakeholders, and has dedicated planners that affords the foreman the time needed in the field with the trades and crew.

Often projects face challenges in terms of their performance by way of budget, cost, and schedule overruns. Some of the common issues faced are but are not limited to scope creep, lack of communication between the stakeholders, lack of clear objectives, inadequate risk management, conflicts, and lack of accountability, etc.

To improve project performance, we need to change the way we deliver projects. Choosing the right contract strategy early in the project can help address these issues and significantly improve your project delivery. Aligning various stakeholders involved in the project such as owners’ team, supplier, sub-contractor, engineering, construction, etc. is important to meet the common objective i.e., the successful outcome of the project. However, one size does not fit all, and it is imperative to learn various strategies available that would suit your project requirements.

This joint session will discover multiple contracting approaches to strengthen both Advanced Work Packaging and Lean Project Delivery.

The topic for the session is spectrum of approaches to Contract Strategy.
